Easter
The kids are off school and probably moaning that they’re bored within 5 minutes. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably looking forward to spending some quality time with the kids but in equal measure, thinking how on earth am I going to entertain them for the next 2 weeks!
I’ve put together a list of activity ideas that will hopefully help you keep them entertained!
Things to do at home
Craft
There are so many easter craft ideas out there, from making bunny masks to making easter bonnets and baskets. There’s hours’ worth of entertainment and endless ideas on this great website for easter craft fun.
Baking
Why not give baking some easter treats a go. Baking Easter treats like cookies, cupcakes or hot cross buns allows children to explore their creativity by decorating with colourful icing, sprinkles, and fun shapes. It’s also a great opportunity to teach them basic cooking skills, measurements and the joy of making something from scratch. Bonus: you all get to scoff them afterwards too! BBC have some great easter baking ideas here.
Easter egg hunt
If you’re feeling even more creative, why not hide clues around the house or garden and get your kids to follow the bunny trail to the easter egg! Doing an Easter egg hunt with kids is a delightful tradition that brings joy, excitement and encourages family bonding. It creates a sense of adventure as children eagerly search for hidden eggs, sparking their curiosity and problem-solving skills. The thrill of discovering colourful eggs filled with treats and surprises adds to the fun, making it a magical experience for both you and them.
Beyond the excitement of finding (and eating, of course) the chocolate, an Easter egg hunt encourages outdoor play, teamwork and friendly competition, helping kids to develop social and motor skills. Most importantly, it fosters lasting memories and strengthens family connections, making Easter a truly special and cherished celebration for all.
Things to do out and about
Visit a farm
Visiting a farm in spring with kids is a wonderful way to experience nature, learn about agriculture and enjoy the fresh outdoors. Springtime brings new life to the farm, with baby animals like lambs, chicks and calves arriving which children can see up close and sometimes even feed or hold. Kids can also learn about planting things such as flowers and fresh produce, and they can see flowers in bloom whilst exploring fields bursting with fresh fruit and veg. Many farms offer fun, hands-on activities such as hayrides, egg hunts, animal petting and farm tours that make learning about farming both exciting and interactive for kids. A farm visit in spring is a perfect way for families to bond while appreciating the beauty of nature and the wonders of rural life.
Take a walk in the woods
Taking a walk in the woods with kids is a wonderful way to connect with nature, encourage curiosity and enjoy some quality, distraction-free family time. The fresh air, peaceful surroundings and towering trees create a perfect environment for relaxation and adventure. Children can explore different plants, listen to birds singing and spot wildlife, making it an exciting and educational experience. Walking in the woods also promotes physical activity, helping kids develop strength and coordination while having fun! Whether it’s collecting leaves,
finding interesting rocks or simply appreciating the beauty of nature, a woodland walk sparks imagination, reduces stress (and screen time!) and creates lasting memories. If you’re not rein acting The Gruffalo (!) you could do a scavenger hunt in the woods! Here are a few things to get the kids to look out for:
- something shaped like an egg
- animal paw prints/tracks
- yellow flowers
- bird song
- wild garlic
- a bird’s nest in a tree
Go wild at a zoo or safari park
Most zoos and safari parks are opening their doors again this month and I’m sure the animals will be delighted to welcome families back!
Visiting a zoo or safari park with kids is a fun and educational experience that allows them to connect with wildlife in an exciting and interactive way. It provides a unique opportunity for children to see animals up close, learn about different species and understand the importance of conservation (on that note, definitely make sure that you research and find parks that prioritise conservation and support endangered species as there can be a negative side to this industry). Wildlife parks often offer engaging activities such as animal feedings, live demonstrations and interactive exhibits that make learning fun and memorable. Plus, a day at the zoo encourages outdoor exploration, curiosity and appreciation for nature and wildlife, making it a perfect family outing that blends entertainment with education.
Thrills for the whole family at a theme park.
Most themes parks are now back up and running and ready for an epic day of fun!
Visiting a theme park with kids is an unforgettable experience filled with excitement, adventure and endless fun (say hello to a few screams!). Theme parks offer a variety of attractions, from thrilling roller coasters to interactive shows and character meet-and-greets, ensuring entertainment for children of all ages. These parks create a magical atmosphere where kids can immerse themselves in their favourite stories and fantasies while also developing confidence by trying out new rides and activities. Beyond the fun, theme parks provide quality family time, allowing parents and children to bond over shared experiences and laughter. With delicious treats, colourful parades and engaging play areas, a theme park visit guarantees a day of cherished memories.
