Here at Kidching, we’re all about making life easier for parents and doing our bit for the planet.
One of our core values is promoting a greener future by creating an online marketplace for buying and selling kids’ stuff. We understand that children outgrow or lose interest in their outfits, toys, and tech in a matter of months, but if there’s nothing wrong with the items, why not give them a second chance?
Instead of adding to landfill, Kidching’s philosophy is to pass them on to another family who can appreciate them – and the savings they make along the way.
It’s Fashion Revolution Week — Here’s Why That Matters
Right now, it’s Fashion Revolution Week (April 22–27), a global campaign that’s all about shaking up how we think about clothes and where they come from. It started in 2013 after the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh — a heartbreaking reminder of the real cost of fast fashion.
The people behind Fashion Revolution Week want us to ask better questions — like who made our clothes, how they were made, and what happens to them when we’re done. It’s a call for more transparency, more responsibility, and a whole lot less waste.
Promoting Sustainability and Transparency
In creating this campaign, it was the founder’s goal to prompt consumers into thinking about where their garments come from and how we can promote sustainability rather than a wear-once-and-throw-it-away mentality.
One of the key aspects of Fashion Revolution Week is its focus on transparency. The movement calls on brands to disclose information about their supply chains and production practices. Brands are being called out to show how their clothes are made and who’s make them. The more we know, the better choices we can make.
Making Fashion More Circular
Fashion Revolution Week also highlights the importance of circularity in fashion – keeping things in use for as long as possible, and designing with the full lifecycle in mind. Sound familiar? It’s pretty much the heart of what we do at Kidching.
Sarah Blair, Kidching’s founder, had her lightbulb moment during a house move:
“The idea of Kidching, came following a house move as we quickly realised with two growing children the sheer volume of stuff we had accumulated over the years, most of which resided in the loft, was stored in the garage or had just been pushed to the back of cupboards. There were so many good quality items that were not suitable for the bin as there was so much life left in them. As well as becoming more and more conscious on the impact of how we dispose of our waste and how this will significantly impact our children’s future.”
Sarah adds:
“We were keen to try to make a difference in making parents lives easier to buy and sell items for their kids. To keep good quality items in circulation and avoid items making their way into landfill as well as trying to help reduce the constant flow of fast fashion and consumerism which is causing significant damage to our planet and will ultimately impact our children’s future. We wanted to be a part of this change.”
